Predicting His Son’s Profession

A Tennessee country preacher had a teenage son, and as he neared the end of high school it was getting time the boy should give some thought to choosing a profession. Like many young men, the boy didn’t really know what he wanted to do, and he didn’t seem too concerned about it.

One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an experiment. He went into the boy’s room and placed on his study desk three items: a Bible, a silver dollar, and a bottle of whiskey.

“I’ll just hide behind the door,” the old preacher said to himself, “and when he comes home from school this afternoon, I’ll see which object he picks up. If it’s the Bible, he’s going to be a preacher like me, and what a blessing that would be! If he picks up the dollar, he’s going to be a businessman, and that would be OK too. But if he picks up the bottle, he’s going to be a no-good drunkard and, Lord, what a shame that would be.”

The older man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son’s footsteps as he entered the house and headed for his room. He tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he spotted the three items on the desk. With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them.

Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. His father, watching quietly, started to silently thank the Lord. But then his son picked up the silver dollar and dropped it into his pocket, and twisted the top off the bottle and took a big drink!

“Lord have mercy,” the old man whispered, “he’s gonna be a Congressman!”

Taxi Driver in Heaven

Taxi Driver In Heaven

A minister has just died and is standing in line waiting to be judged and admitted to Heaven. While waiting he asks the man in front of him about himself.

The man says, “I was a taxi driver from New York City.” The angel standing at the gate calls out “next,” and the taxi driver steps up.

The angel hands him a golden staff and a cornucopia of fruits, cheeses, and wine and lets him pass. The taxi driver looks pleased and proceeds through the gates into heaven.

The minister begins to think about the richness he’ll get upon his entrance.

But instead, the angel hands him a wooden staff and some bread and water.

The minister is very concerned and asks the angel, “That guy is a taxi driver and gets a golden staff and a cornucopia! I spend my entire life as a minister and get next to nothing! How can that be?”

The angel replies, “Up here we judge on results. All of your people slept through your sermons. In his taxi, they prayed.

The art of Lying

Photography Prints

A minister told his congregation, “Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark Chapter 17.”

The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17.

Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, “Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying.”

church and state

There has been much debate over the years about what the founding fathers meant about the separation of church and state. In recent times there has been much disinformation about how they actually believed, especially George Washington. In this short Ebook the author tries to explain how they actually felt.

The Preacher and the Golfer

Fred had tried to be particularly careful about his language as he played
golf with his preacher. But on the twelfth hole, when he twice failed to
hit out of a sand trap, he lost his resolve and let fly with a string of
expletives.

The preacher felt obliged to respond. “I have observed,” said he in a calm
voice, “that the best golfers do not use foul language.”

“I guess not, said Fred, “what the hell do they have to cuss about?”

The New Organist

Art Prints

The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to,
after the worship service, ask the congregation to come up with more
money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.
Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick
and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute.

The substitute wanted to know what to play. “Here’s a copy of the
service,” he said impatiently. “But you’ll have to think of something to
play after I make the announcement about the finances.”

At the end of the service, the minister paused and said, “Brothers and
Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much
as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge
$100 or more, please stand up.” At that moment, the substitute organist
played “The Star-Spangled Banner.” And that is how the substitute
became the regular organist!

The Priest, the Minister and the Rabbi

The Catholic, the Baptist, and the Jew

A Catholic priest, a Baptist minister, and a Rabbi want to see which of them is best at his job. They decide each will go into the woods, find a bear, and attempt to convert it.

A few days later they get together as agreed, and the priest begins: “When I found the bear, I read to him from the Catechism and sprinkled him with holy water. Next week is his First Communion.”

The other two murmur their agreement that he did a very good job.

“I found a bear by the stream,” says the Baptist, “and preached God’s holy word. The bear was so mesmerized that he let me baptize him!”

The other two murmur their agreement that he did a very good job.

They both look down at the Rabbi, who is lying on a gurney in a body cast. “You know, looking back,” the Rabbi says, “maybe I shouldn’t have started with the circumcision….”
